Lay Servant Training
Leading, Caring, Communicating: Lay Servant Ministries offer opportunities for laity who desire to use their witness, leadership, and service to inspire others to a deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This may include the interpretation of the Scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.
Upcoming Training at Smithville UMC on November 10, 2018
Basic Course: Looking for leadership training? This course is foundational for all courses in lay servant ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.
- Lay Servants Lead in Conflict Resolution, led by Rev. Melissa Dodd, District Superintendent. She will be using the book, The Spirit and Art of Conflict Transformation, by Thomas Porter. Every church deals with conflict, the color of the carpet or the style of worship. Lay servants can be equipped and empowered to help led through those times of conflict as a time of transformation.
United Methodist Polity, led by Rev. Rebecca Mulford, using the book, The Method of Our Mission, by Laceye C. Warner. This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. It will connect denominational governance and organization to or beliefs, as well as our mission. It will give a clear understanding of our identity, as Methodists and our purpose to make disciples for the transformation of the world. A copy of the 2016 Book of Discipline is recommended.
