Class Summary
The Basic course is an easy way to learn more about Methodism, and our history, heritage, administration and organization. You will learn about lay leadership in the local church, and the myriad ways you can lead others to a relationship with Christ.Class Details and Logistics
Course MaterialsMinistry isn’t just a clergy endeavor; all Christians are called to serve. Laity serves on the front line of evangelical living. Help the laity explore and discover their unique call in serving God, neighbor, and the greater church. In this course, we'll use the book, Lay Servant Ministries, The Participant Book (Basic Course). It's available online at the links below: Please read the book prior to the first class. Additional materials from the course will be emailed to the address you provide at registration. There are no pre-requisites for this course, and it is not a pre-requisite for any other lay education courses.
Class Dates
To receive credit for this class, you must be present at all three meeting dates. They are:
- Thursday, August 4, 2022, 6-8 p.m.
- Friday, August 5, 2022 6-8 p.m.
- Saturday, August 6, 2022, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
About Your Instructor: Dr. Yvette Richards
In addition to being the Northwest District's Lay Education Coordinator, Dr. Richards is the Director of Community Connections and Missions at St. James UMC. She has taught many courses for UMW retreats and traveled the world providing leadership insight. Dr. Richards is a John Maxwell Team Member, certified in coaching, leadership, training and speaking. She holds a bachelor’s in mass communications from North Carolina A&T State University, a master’s degree in leadership development from Walden University, a master’s degree in Christian ministry from United Theological Seminary and a Doctorate of Ministry from United Theological Seminary.
